Sister Grimm, Searching for San Antonio's Past, 18x24 portrait painting

In early November, it was unusually cold.  In fact, it was almost freezing when I took part in a Ghost Tour in downtown San Antonio with Paul and my DayTripper friends.  Sister Grimm was waiting for us in her Victorian dress and accessories.  She was prepared to give us some goosebumps with her ghostly tales of San Antonio's past.  I figured I might get a double case of them.  From the cold and the scary stories of Sister Grimm, I had an above-average chance of getting lots of goosebumps.

Before we started, she asked if we had any questions.  "Are you going to be warm enough tonight?"  I asked her.  I had bought a new winter coat to withstand the cold.  She replied, "Oh, my goodness, yes.  I have my sweatsuit on under this dress."  Then, she cleared her throat and had a far-away look in her eye.  We were going to do some time-traveling.  Our first stop was the old and haunted Menger Hotel by Alamo Plaza.

Our last stop for our tour through SA's historical and scary past took us to the San Fernando Cathedral on Main Plaza.  She motioned for us to follow her.  The group bunched up and then proceeded.  We ended up behind the old church.  Looking toward the doorway, she told us her final story.  Then, she looked up.  It looked as though she'd seen a ghost.  A distant light flooded down on her.  Her face glowed in the semi-darkness.  I looked around at the others.  Everyone was quiet.  I wanted to remember this moment.  I snapped a quick photo.  Three months later, I started on her portrait.  I kept thinking about all her stories while working in my studio.  She left an impression on me.

New Songs for Spring 2013, BIRD Paintings

New Spring Songs
by Cindy Morawski

Looking out my kitchen window, I notice the birds feeding.  One particular squirrel sits atop our big red metal feeder like a prince
surveying his kingdom.  A plague of doves float down to pick up the remains of the seeds.  They flap and beat their wings in a noisy and bossy way.  Soon, they cover the ground with their muted colors.  One sounds the alarm, when suddenly a large bird shadow flies over.   A hawk cries a warning.  He's just as hungry.  The doves fly up in a mass of feathers and panic.

Baby in Blue

Spring's energy almost takes my breath away.  I feel like I've just awoken from a long sleep.  The live oak trees have lost their leaves and now show a green fuzzy glow about the neighborhood.  Birds seem to be everywhere I look.  The mockingbird flits back and forth to the bush outside my kitchen window above the sink.  When I'm doing the dishes, I hear a flutter and spot a quick movement.  The mockingbird is building a nest for its young.  I see other evidence of this happening in my yard.  The wrens are darting in and out of the birdhouse that I hung in one of my backyard's trees.  Their furtive patterns don't fool me for a second.  I've seen this behavior before in the springtime.  They will leave their feathered legacies.  One egg at a time.  One fledgling at a time.

San Antonio Song (with Frame)

This spring I painted birds with color.  Baby in Blue is a metaphor for new songs and a spring awakening.  San Antonio Song  shows the Southwest bird with a mission's stucco window.  Is it looking in or looking out?  It has a song in its heart, ready for a season bright with sunshine and bright flowers.

If you'd like to see my paintings, I'll be in my tent with my new season's artwork in Maverick Plaza, space #124, at LaVillita in downtown San Antonio, the weekend after Easter, April 6, 7, at the Starving Artist Art Show.  This will be the 51st year of the show.  It started in 1963.  It's also a Fund Raiser for the Less Fortunate and is sponsored by the Little Church of LaVillita.  It opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. each day.  There are no admission fees for the show.  Hope to see you there!

Spring's the Thing! Celebrating with Two More Paintings

Spring Fling Paintings!
Spring's the Thing
I heard a coach say one time, "First we make our habits and then our habits make us." I recently thought about this and how it could make my life better. One habit I want to include in my life is the habit of celebrating life. Feeling joy is a win-win situation. It's a great mental and physical health tool, plus a positive way to spend your time. It just feels good!
Participating in last weekend's Fiesta Art Show sponsored by the Randolph Art League at Alamo Plaza on April 9th and 10th, not only helped me show and sell my art, but it also allowed me to celebrate Fiesta and to meet lots of wonderful people at the show. It gave me great joy to visit with all those folks who came by my tent. In fact, I took a survey and discovered that there were Fiesta visitors from as many as 30 different states in the U. S. and from 6 different countries. States ranged from the east to west coasts and the countries did as well with a range from Liverpool, England to Sydney, Australia. It was fun to not only find out where they were from, but to get to know them a little better. That part was priceless!
Another part of my experience that delighted me was my setting. I pitched my tent under the shade of a huge oak tree across from the Alamo, the Menger Hotel, and Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum. Everytime I looked up and saw the title under Ripley's--Odditorium, I couldn't help but giggle. I also enjoyed watching all the activities with the double-decker tourist buses, horse-led carriages, and stretch limos. They parked right behind me so I had a chance to watch the comings and goings of a city whose festival kept things movin' and shakin.' The Alamo's official gun salutes gave me a pause to Remember the Alamo and to keep in mind that it was time to Fiesta!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Besides Fiesta, another spring thing of joy for me is my yard. Even with our Stage I watering development, my roses are blooming and their scent wafts over the garden, giving me a reason to stop and smell them, while enjoying their color and perfume; it manages to lift my spirits in seconds flat.
More JOY comes from my pets. Rusty and Phineas, my dogs, love to play in our community greenbelt. I love watching them run through the wildflowers when we go for a hike. Their abandon is contagious! It helps me forget the drudgery of daily chores and work-a-day problems. It's all good.
With Spring this year, I will choose to feel joy. Choose to look for a reason to celebrate life. My above two recent paintings are all about spring and celebrations. If you'd like to see more, please check out my website: www.cindymorawski.com.
HAPPY EASTER!!!
